The understanding of photography
Takes us to the future of our society

Futuristic ideas in works of art

Bill Gates, the chairman of Microsoft, one of the most famous businessman on the earth, founded a very special company in 1989. The company’s name is Corbis Images. Corbis Images represented one of the world’s leading image archives and licensing business. How can Bill Gates possibly imagined about this kind of business in 1989. It’s almost 30 years ago.

We can find the answer from a radical manifesto of Situationists. Bill Gates admitted that the idea of image licensing business came from Guy Debord’s idea and his book <Society of Spectacle>.

There are various kinds of futuristic ideas in works of art and manifestos of artists. It does not materialize but will be fulfilled very soon.

One of the well-known philosopher Vilém Flusser said, “This is new kind of function in which human beings are neither the constant nor the variable but in which human beings and apparatus merge into a unity. It is therefore appoporate to call photographers functionaries.”

After the Industrial Revolution, tools became machines. And the relationship was radically changed, or rather it was reversed. Before the Industiral Revolution, the tool was the variable,  human was constant. But after the Industrial Revolution the human became the variable, the machine became the constant. Today, most of human beings work on machines. 30 years ago, computers were expensive toys. Today, civilization fall apart down without computers.

But, as Flusser said, photographers do not work in the industrial sense. It’s not work in the industrial sense. It’s creation, processing and accumulation of information. The understanding of photography takes us to the future of our society.

Visual reinterpretation

“The root of such an approach lie in the conceptual art of the mid-1960s and 1970s, when photography became central to the wider dissemination and communication of artists’ performances and other temporary works of art.”

- <THE PHOTOGRAPHY AS CONTEMPORARY ART>  by Charlotte Cotton

The theater photo work is not just plain documentation.

It’s a visual reinterpretation.
